Description
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia proudly announces the new launch date of UiTMSAT-2, its second nanosatellite mission, developed under the ASEANSAT Project, a regional collaboration initiated in 2021 to advance space technology among ASEAN nations.
UiTMSAT-2 is a 1U CubeSat nanosatellite (10×10×11.35 cm, 1.1 kg) designed and developed with over 60% local contribution by UiTM lecturers and students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The mission is supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and executed in partnership with:
-
University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD), Philippines
-
King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB), Thailand
-
Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), Japan
Carrying a high-resolution camera to demonstrate Earth observation functions and a space-based Internet of Things (IoT) communication device to receive data from Earth, UiTMSAT-2 will support future uses in areas like environmental monitoring, disaster management, and improving connectivity in rural regions.
After successfully passing rigorous inspections by JAXA at Kyutech and JAXA HQ in Tokyo in July 2025, the satellite has been handed over for launch preparation on 25 July 2025. It is scheduled to be delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) via the 7th H3 Launch Vehicle on 26 October 2025, followed by orbital deployment from the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (J-SSOD) in Q1 2026.
This mission represents the first ASEAN-led joint nanosatellite project, with UiTM as the lead institution, a significant achievement toward positioning UiTM as a regional hub for space technology and advancing its vision to become a Global Renowned University (GRU) by 2025.
