CTWR 2022 EPISODE 4 WITH PROF. DATO' IR TS. DR HAJI MOHD FOZI ALI & ASSOC. PROF DATIN DR ARNIS ASMAT

This is how I started CTWR 2022 Episode 4. These words are apt because CTWR strives for a balance between relaxed but information-rich content.

This episode was successfully broadcast live via UiTM's YouTube channel at Tun Abdul Razak Library (PTAR), Puncak Alam Campus.

For this CTWR, I have invited two (2) panellists to speak on the topic of “Global Goals: UiTM at the Forefront in Green Initiative", namely Prof Dato 'Ir Ts. Dr Haji Mohd Fozi Ali, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development), Universiti Teknologi MARA and Associate Prof Datin Dr Arnis Asmat, Director of UiTM Green Centre, also known as UiTM Green Centre (UGC).

In this episode, Prof Dato Fozi spoke about the role of the Office of Infrastructure & Infostructure Development (PPII) in creating a green, sustainable campus ecosystem through the Green Initiative and Energy Saving for UiTM, in line with the UiTM 2025 Strategic Plan (GRU2025).

In total, PPII has designed six (6) initiatives for the period 2020-2025. One of these is Campus Visibility and Sustainability, which focuses on improving infrastructure facilities, campus beautification, building upgrades and planned energy, water and waste management.

This long-term plan aims not only to increase financial savings and reduce UiTM's operating costs, but also to reduce its impact on the environment. For example, UiTM has an expenditure of about RM 140 million on paying electricity bills every year. Through this Green Initiative and Energy Saving for UiTM, PPII has successfully achieved electricity cost savings of 10% through the UiTM Solar Farm Project (in Gambang and Pasir Gudang) and the Renewable Energy Photovoltaic Project for UiTM-owned campuses. A very significant achievement for UiTM.

In addition, the installation of the solar panel system, which became operational in May 2021, has successfully reduced UiTM's carbon footprint by 74,000 tonnes per year. These efforts also reduce some of the UiTM's dependence on TNB power supply and ultimately reduce carbon emissions into the air.

However, it is unlikely that these initiatives can achieve their goals without the awareness and support of all Keluarga UiTM. Therefore, awareness of the importance of energy conservation needs to be promoted, starting with the Responsibility Centres (RC/PTJ), units, faculties and branch campuses to ensure that the goal of making UiTM a carbon neutral university can be achieved.

Apart from this, Prof Dato Fozi also shared about some other energy saving initiatives that are currently being actively implemented by the PPII. These include the installation of photocells and timers in the corridor of the Engineering complex, switching the right tariff according to the profile of energy consumers (C1 Commercial tariff to C1 OPTR tariff), switching energy efficient appliances using existing service contracts, and installing motion sensors in the toilets of all UiTM buildings. Moreover, the PPII also regularly monitors the use of the central air-conditioning units and promotes Earth Hour at RC/PTJ level.

Next, Associate Professor Datin Dr Arnis explained the efforts of the Green Centre or UGC, which was established under the PPII and is responsible for mobilising initiatives to green the university.

Overall, the UGC, which was established in October 2020, aims to support the sustainability agenda not only at the university and community level, but also globally. According to her, one of the roles of the UGC in general is to coordinate all activities, initiatives and innovations to create a holistic ecosystem for a green, sustainable UiTM campus. In addition, the UGC serves as a hub for collecting, analysing and reporting 'Big Data' on sustainability for various purposes, including university rankings at national and international levels.

Thanks to these initiatives, UiTM is very proud to be ranked 9th among higher education institutions in Malaysia in the UI Green Metric World University Rankings 2021 (UIGM 2021). UiTM's participation in 2021 has improved its position by 34 places compared to the previous year. Congratulations and well done Keluarga UiTM!

Apart from that, the third participation of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in the Low Carbon City Challenge 2030 (LCC 2030 Challenge) made its own history when five UiTM zones/buildings won 5 Diamond Awards for Zone 1 UiTM, Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM), Faculty of Architecture Planning and Surveying (FSPU), Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Chancellery Building and Health Centre.

For the second year of participation (2020), UiTM received 6 Diamond Recognition for Best Practices Between 5-25% for Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Chancellery Building, Engineering Complex, Health Centre, Faculty of Architecture Planning and Surveying (FSPU), Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM) and Zone 1 UiTM. UiTM also received a Provisional Certificate (2018) and Diamond Rating recognition for Best Practices for the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Chancellery Building (2019).

I was intrigued by Associate Prof Datin Dr Arnis' phrase: "Green is expensive". Without the efforts, support and backing of every Keluarga UiTM, it is not easy to create a culture that sustains life and the environment. Therefore, each RC/PTJ must take the initiative to optimise collaboration with internal strategic partners such as faculties and student associations as well as joint ventures with local institutions or agencies to achieve the targets set under SDG 17. Therefore, it should be reminded once again that awareness or "cakna" on the initiatives to achieve "net zero carbon emissions" for the sustainability of this beloved university needs to be further strengthened.

Kandungan Segar, Diskusi Inklusif!

Begitulah saya mulakan CTWR 2022 Episod 4. Tepat sekali kata-kata ini kerana CTWR bermatlamat untuk mencapai keseimbangan antara kandungan yang santai tapi penuh dengan pelbagai maklumat.

Episod kali ini berlangsung dengan jayanya secara langsung menerusi saluran YouTube UiTM, bertempat di Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak (PTAR), Kampus Puncak Alam.

Pada CTWR kali ini, saya telah menjemput dua (2) orang tetamu panelis untuk membincangkan mengenai “Global Goals: UiTM at the Forefront in Green Initiative”, iaitu Prof. Dato' Ir Ts. Dr Haji Mohd Fozi Ali, Timbalan Naib Canselor (Pembangunan), Universiti Teknologi MARA dan Prof. Madya Datin Dr Arnis Asmat, Pengarah Pusat Hijau UiTM yang juga dikenali sebagai UiTM Green Centre (UGC).

Dalam episod kali ini, Prof Dato Fozi telah berkongsikan beberapa peranan Pejabat Pembangunan Infrastruktur & Infostruktur (PPII) dalam pembentukan ekosistem Kampus Lestari Hijau melalui Green Initiative dan Energy Saving for UiTM seiring dengan perancangan strategik UiTM 2025 (GRU2025).

Secara keseluruhannya, PPII telah menggariskan enam (6) inisiatif sepanjang tahun 2020-2025 dan salah satunya ialah Ketampakan dan Kelestarian Kampus yang memberi fokus kepada menaiktaraf kemudahan infrastruktur, pengindahan kampus, menaiktaraf banggunan serta pengurusan tenaga, air dan sisa yang terancang.

Perancangan jangka panjang ini bukan sahaja bertujuan bagi meningkatkan penjimatan kewangan dan mengurangkan perbelanjaan operasi UiTM, malah ianya juga bertujuan bagi mengurangkan implikasi negatif terhadap ekosistem dan alam sekitar. Sebagai contoh, setiap tahun, UiTM telah mencatat perbelanjaan bagi pembayaran bil elektrik sebanyak lebih kurang RM 140 juta. Melalui Green Initiative dan Energy Saving for UiTM ini, PPII telah berjaya membuat penjimatan tarif elektrik sebanyak 10% melalui Projek Solar Farm UiTM (di Gambang dan Pasir Gudang) dan Projek Penjanaan Tenaga Boleh Baharu Solar Fotovoltaik bagi kampus-kampus milik UiTM. Satu pencapaian yang sangat signifikan buat UiTM.

Selain itu, pemasangan sistem solar panel yang mula beroperasi pada bulan Mei 2021 ini telah berjaya mengurangkan jejak karbon UiTM sebanyak 74,000 tan setahun. Usaha ini sekaligus mengurangkan sebahagian kebergantungan UiTM kepada sumber bekalan elektrik TNB dan akhirnya mengurangkan pembebasan gas karbon ke udara.

Namun, inisiatif-inisiatif yang dilakukan ini tidak mungkin mencapai sasarannya jika tiada kesedaran dan sokongan dari kesemua Keluarga UiTM. Oleh itu, penekanan dan kesedaran tentang bertapa peri pentingnya menjimatkan penggunaan tenaga perlu dipupuk bermula dari Pusat Tanggungjawab, unit, fakulti dan kampus cawangan bagi menjamin agenda menjadikan UiTM sebuah universiti neutral karbon dapat dicapai.

Selain itu, Prof Dato Fozi juga sempat berkongsi beberapa inisiatif penjimatan lain yang kini giat dijalankan oleh PPII, antaranya adalah melibatkan pemasangan Photocell dan Timer di koridor Kompleks Kejuruteraan, penukaran tarif yang betul mengikut profil pengguna tenaga (Tarif C1 Perdagangan kepada Tarif C1 OPTR), penukaran peralatan cekap tenaga menggunakan kontrak perkhidmatan sediaada dan pemasangan Motion Sensor di tandas-tandas seluruh banggunan UiTM. Selain itu, PPII juga kerap menjalankan pemantauan penggunaan sistem penyaman udara berpusat dan mempromosikan Earth Hour di peringkat PTJ.

Seterusnya, Prof. Madya Datin Dr Arnis Asmat telah menerangkan usaha Green Center atau UGC yang ditubuhkan dibawah PPII dalam memikul tanggungjawab menggerakkan inisiatif penghijauan universiti.

Secara keseluruhannya, UGC yang ditubuhkan pada Oktober 2020 bertujuan mendukung agenda kelestarian bukan sahaja di peringkat universiti dan komuniti malah di peringkat global. Menurut beliau, antara peranan UGC secara amnya adalah mengkoordinasi semua aktiviti, inisiatif dan inovasi ke arah satu pembentukan ekosistem Kampus Lestari Hijau UiTM yang holistik. Selain itu UGC juga berperanan sebagai hab pengumpulan, menganalisa dan melaporkan ‘big data’ kelestarian bagi pelbagai tujuan termasuk penarafan universiti di peringkat nasional dan antarabangsa.

Melalui inisiatif ini, UiTM amat berbangga dengan penganugerahan tempat ke-9 dalam kalangan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (IPT) di Malaysia dalam UI Green Metric World University Rankings 2021 (UIGM 2021). Melalui penyertaan UiTM pada tahun 2021 ini, kedudukan UiTM telah melonjak sebanyak 34 anak tangga berbanding dengan tahun sebelumnya. Tahniah dan syabas Keluarga UiTM!

Selain itu, penyertaan kali ketiga Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) di dalam Program Cabaran Bandar Rendah Karbon 2030 (LCC 2030 Challenge) pula telah mencatat sejarah tersendiri apabila lima zon/bangunan UiTM telah berjaya merangkul Anugerah Berlian (Diamond).

Untuk penyertaan tahun kedua (2020), UiTM menerima 6 Diamond Recognition for Best Practices Between 5-25% untuk Bangunan Canseleri Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, Kompleks Kejuruteraan, Pusat Kesihatan, Fakulti Senibina Perancangan dan Ukur (FSPU), Fakulti Sains Komputer dan Matematik (FSKM) dan Zon 1 UiTM. Juga, UiTM turut menerima Provisional Certificate (2018) dan Diamond Rating recognition of Best Practices melalui Bangunan Canseleri Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (2019).

Saya tertarik dengan frasa yang digunakan oleh Prof Madya Datin Dr Arnis iaitu “Green is expensive”. Pembudayaan untuk melestarikan hidup dan alam sekitar tidak dapat dicapai dengan mudah tanpa usaha, dokongan dan sokongan setiap Keluarga UiTM. Oleh itu, setiap PTJ perlu mengambil langkah inisiatif dan mengoptimumkan kerjasama dengan rakan-rakan strategik dalaman seperti fakulti-fakulti dan persatuan-persatuan pelajar selain usahasama dengan badan-badan atau agensi tempatan bagi menggapai objektif yang digariskan dibawah SDG 17 ini. Oleh itu, perlu diingatkan sekali lagi, sikap cakna atau “awareness” terhadap inisiatif-inisiatif ke arah mencapai “Net Zero Carbon Emission” perlu dipertingkatkan lagi untuk kelestarian universiti tercinta ini.
